ACT Teachers Slam VP Sara Duterte as ‘Fake News Queen’

ACT party-list hits back at Vice President over alleged misinformation

Manila, Philippines — The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) party-list has issued a scathing statement against Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, labeling her the “Fake News Queen” following a series of controversial remarks regarding the group’s stance on national education issues.

The backlash came after Duterte allegedly accused ACT of politicizing education and supporting anti-government ideologies — claims the group strongly denied.

“We challenge Vice President Duterte to stop spreading lies and to focus on solving real problems in the education sector,” ACT said in a press release on Sunday.

Tensions Escalate Over Education And Activism

The exchange is the latest in a string of clashes between Duterte and ACT, a group known for its progressive stance on teacher rights, student welfare, and academic freedom.

Duterte has previously criticized the group, claiming it is “masquerading as an educators’ organization while pushing a political agenda.” In response, ACT said her allegations were “baseless, dangerous, and meant to silence dissent.”

Act: Focus On Real Education Reforms

ACT called on the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education (DepEd) to shift focus toward real, measurable improvements in the public school system, including shortages in classrooms, learning materials, and teacher support.

“Labeling us as terrorists or fake educators will not fix overcrowded classrooms or underpaid teachers,” ACT said. “We demand accountability, not name-calling.”

VP Camp Yet To Respond

As of writing, the Office of the Vice President has not issued an official statement addressing ACT’s accusations or clarifying the basis of Duterte’s remarks.

Political analysts note that this confrontation may deepen the already tense relationship between DepEd leadership and progressive educators’ groups, especially amid debates over the K–12 review, budget allocations, and academic freedom.
