Harry Roque’s Asylum Bid Denied by Netherlands, Says DOJ Chief

Manila, Philippines — The Netherlands has reportedly rejected the asylum application of former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, according to Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla.

“As far as I know, the Netherlands did not grant his asylum, that’s why it’s now up to Germany if they will give it,” Remulla told reporters on Wednesday.

Roque, who reappeared in The Hague earlier this year after months away from public view, initially announced his intention to seek asylum in the Netherlands following the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte in March.

Roque is currently facing a non-bailable warrant of arrest from a court in Angeles City, Pampanga, for qualified trafficking in persons, reportedly in connection with a Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) based in Pampanga.

Unlike earlier months when he was able to travel under the radar — reportedly to Dubai and China — Roque is now subject to criminal charges, making his asylum case more complicated.

DOJ Undersecretary Nicholas Felix Ty previously confirmed that the department had taken steps to block Roque’s asylum petition, under direct orders from Remulla.

Government Considering Extradition or Deportation

Remulla said the Philippine government is now waiting for the cancellation of Roque’s passport, which would render him an undocumented alien and make him eligible for arrest by Interpol.

“We can file for extradition, but it may not be necessary if his passport is canceled. Once he’s undocumented, Interpol can intervene,” Remulla added.

This mirrors the government’s approach in the case of former lawmaker Arnie Teves, whose passport was canceled before he was arrested through Interpol and deported from Timor-Leste.

Roque Denies Claim, Says He’s Back in The Hague

In a statement, Roque denied reports that his asylum bid had been rejected and accused the Marcos administration of spreading misinformation.

“My trip to Germany was pre-planned. I was invited by the Filipino community in Germany, where I officiated an oath-taking ceremony,” Roque said, referring to his appearance alongside group Maharlika.

He added that he is now back in The Hague, suggesting that his asylum application may still be in progress or under appeal.
