MANILA, Philippines – Filipino tennis ace Alexa Eala pulled off another stunning comeback as she booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the WTA 150 Lexus Eastbourne Open, defeating third seed and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, 0-6, 6-2, 3-2 (ret.), on Wednesday, June 25.
Playing on Court 1 at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club in the United Kingdom, Eala overcame a lopsided first set and turned the match around with improved rhythm, control, and consistent baseline play.
Ostapenko, visibly hampered by an ankle injury, retired in the third set after two medical timeouts, ending what was shaping up to be one of the tournament’s most exciting matchups.
Comeback Queen
Eala, 20, now ranked No. 74 in the world, showed remarkable poise and adaptability against the former world No. 5, just three months after defeating the Latvian star in straight sets at the Miami Open.
Despite being blanked in the first set, Eala regained her footing in the second, winning four straight games and ultimately sealing the set 6-2. She carried the momentum into the third, breaking early and holding serve until Ostapenko’s retirement.
Quarterfinals Up Next
Eala is set to face the winner between 2024 Australian Open semifinalist Dayana Yamstremska of Ukraine and wildcard entry Francesca Jones of Great Britain.
With this victory, Eala continues her rise in the WTA rankings and reinforces her readiness for Wimbledon, where her performance on grass could signal her transition into the sport’s top tier.
