TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte — In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the community, the Davao del Norte Police Provincial Office (DNPPO) confirmed the arrest of two male minors in connection with the murder of 19-year-old Sophia Coquilla, a student who was found dead inside her family’s home in Barangay La Filipina, Tagum City.

The crime occurred in the early hours of July 9, and police say the young woman suffered 38 stab wounds, suggesting a gruesome and frenzied attack.

The Crime Scene and Initial Findings

According to reports, Coquilla was found lifeless in her residence in Purok 3A, with multiple stab wounds across her body. Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) confirmed the severity of the injuries, identifying two knives at the scene: a blood-stained butterfly knife and a kitchen knife believed to have been used in the attack.

DNPPO Chief Police Colonel Ariel Philip Pontillas stated in a briefing that the murder appeared to have been carefully planned, as the assailants entered the victim’s home with the apparent intent to steal and potentially silence the victim.

Arrest of Two Minor Suspects

The suspects—both minors whose identities are withheld due to legal protections under the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act—were arrested in a nearby boarding house later that same day.

Inside the room, police recovered several items believed to be stolen from Coquilla, including:

  • An Apple laptop
  • An iPad
  • An iPhone
  • Two wristwatches
  • Additional personal effects

The discovery of these belongings, along with forensic evidence, led to the swift arrest of the minors.

Four Suspects Believed Involved

Authorities believe the crime was perpetrated by a group of four individuals, not just the two in custody. According to Police Colonel Pontillas, operations are now focused on tracking down the remaining two suspects, who are considered armed and dangerous.

Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from nearby establishments and working with digital forensic experts to trace any online activity or communication linked to the planning of the crime.

Minors in Custody, Evidence Under Review

The arrested suspects have been turned over to the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) in accordance with child protection protocols. The General Investigation Section is now in charge of reviewing the recovered weapons and stolen goods, which are being treated as key evidence.

Authorities have not yet ruled out the possibility of robbery with homicide, and are considering other potential motives, including personal grudge, as more interviews with friends, family, and neighbors are being conducted.

Community Outrage and Calls for Justice

The murder of Sophia Coquilla, described by her peers as a bright and kind young woman, has sparked outrage and grief across Tagum City. On social media, the hashtag #JusticeForSophia has gained traction, with friends and strangers alike demanding swift legal action.

Local officials have condemned the killing, with Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib pledging support to the Coquilla family and urging law enforcement to “bring all those responsible to justice, regardless of age.”

What Happens Next?

As the investigation unfolds, prosecutors are expected to determine whether the minors will be tried under Republic Act No. 9344, which outlines how criminal liability applies to children in conflict with the law. If proven that the minors acted with discernment and the crime is heinous in nature, they may face full criminal liability.
